This Tsukinowa Awasedo stone, mined within the grounds of Tsukinowa-dera Temple near Mt. Atago in Kyoto, has a hardness of 3.5 on a scale of 1 to 5 (1 being softest). It is suitable for finishing Japanese knives, carpentry tools, and swords. Depending on the school, it is used for the final polishing of swords, combining characteristics of both Eastern and Western stones to accommodate various blades.
