Commune of Paris
engraving on wood from circa 1872, on the theme of the commune of Paris. The Paris Commune is the most important of the insurrectional communes of France in 1870-1871, which lasted 72 days, from March 18, 1871 to the “Bloody Week” of May 21 to 28, 1871. Composed of an engraving cut in the form of a cut. Entitled: “Fire of the Court of Auditors and the Legion of Honor, started on the evening of May 23.”
The engraving shows a building on fire with flames rising into the night sky. Several groups of people are visible in nearby streets, some appearing to flee the fire while others appear to be soldiers or guards possibly trying to contain the chaos. The architectural details of the burning building and the surrounding trees are finely drawn.
This event takes place during the last tragic week known as "Bloody Week", where the Communards burned several emblematic buildings in Paris to prevent their recapture by Versailles government forces. The massive destruction was part of a desperate act as Versailles troops gradually regained control over Paris.
