For your consideration is a highly collectible 1886 $1 Silver Certificate, commonly referred to by collectors as the “Martha Washington Note.”
This historic piece of American currency features Martha Washington, the wife of President George Washington and notably the only woman ever depicted on a regularly issued U.S. paper bill.
These notes were issued during a time when U.S. paper currency was backed by precious metals. The inscription “Silver Certificate” meant the bearer could once redeem this note for actual silver held by the U.S. Treasury—a practice that has long since been discontinued.
This is a large-size note (pre-1928), making it significantly bigger than modern U.S. currency and a standout piece for collectors of early American money.
This was acquired from an estate and is ungraded, please see photos
