The Reggiane Re.2005 Sagittario was a fighter aircraft that was developed from the Reggiane Re.2000. Its development began in 1941 and the first prototype flew in May 1942, reaching a speed of 628 km/h. The wing had a new landing gear that retracted towards the wing tips, and the armament consisted of two 20 mm cannons in the wing and two 12.7 mm machine guns above the engine. In February, the Italian government ordered a zero series of 18 units and a subsequent 750 units, but these were never produced. The second prototype, already tested by the Luftwaffe since spring 1943, reached a speed of 720 km/h. Deliveries of the RE.2005 began in May 1943 with licensed Fiat RA.1050 RC-58 engines with a power of 1475 hp. After the capitulation of Italy, the manufactured units were confiscated by the Luftwaffe, several aircraft served with the Berlin air defense units.
