A vintage Thai brass statue of the Buddha entering the state of Nirvana at the moment of his passing. 20th c.
After 45 years preaching the path to emancipation from the the bondage of worldly suffering, this reclining Buddha celebrates Buddha entering into the state of Nirvana in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh in 543 B.C. He announced that he was relinquishing his will to live as his body was already worn out, and that he would enter into Nirvana, passing away, on Baisakh, Full Moon Day.
This momentous event is the raison d'etre for Bangkok's Wat Pho in which houses a 46 metre gold plated reclining Buddha, the most celebrated version in the Buddhist world. IMAGES 7 & 8.
Although on an altogether more modest scale, this reclining Buddha modelled in brass will be of interest to devotees of the Buddhism.
