Rare
Antique Large ‘The Autocar Folding Map of England & Wales’, Published 1920’s
This is
a rare linen backed folding map, the front cover reads:
The Autocar.
FOLDING MAP OF ENGLAND & WALES.
PUBLISHED FROM
The Autocar OFFICES,
ILIFFE & SONS LTD, 20, TUDOR ST., LONDON
This map was published by ‘The Autocar Offices (Iliffe & Sons), they
were highly regarded for their ingenious patented mounting systems that allowed
drivers to view sections of the map without fully unfolding it in a cramped
vehicle. The coloured map was printed in 36 sections and is linen backed. It has
a scale of 8 miles to an inch. The maps copyright belonged to John
Bartholomew & Co. The map displays ‘main roads’ and ‘other roads’, the
roads are not numbered, the numbering of roads was introduced in 1922 and
started to appear on maps very soon after, indicating that this map either
predates that introduction or is shortly after.
The map measures approx.
142cm by 114cm laid flat and measures 24cm by 19cm by 2cm when folded.
The map has a price of
12/- 6d, applied to the front, this suggests that this example has never had a
cover, as the price would have been applied to the cover instead.
The map has some water
marks and other staining, some of the linen folds have started to fracture. Please
study the photos.
A rare collectable map.
