DESCRIPTION: The Roland C.II, affectionately known as the "Walfisch" (Whale), was one of the most aerodynamically advanced aircraft of the early Great War. Its unique monocoque fuselage design was built with two thin layers of plywood strips wrapped over a frame, creating a smooth, streamlined shape that allowed it to outrun many Allied fighters of the time. Serving primarily as a reconnaissance and escort aircraft, the Walfisch offered the crew an exceptional field of view from its high-seated cockpit, making it a difficult target to surprise in the treacherous skies over the Western Front.
