What is ABS Wheel Speed Sensor

An ABS wheel speed sensor, also known as an anti-lock braking system (ABS) sensor, monitors the rotation speed of a vehicle's wheels and sends that data to the ABS control module:

The ABS control module then uses this information to adjust the braking pressure to prevent the wheels from locking up during hard braking. This helps the driver maintain steering control and avoid skidding, especially in slippery conditions.

The ABS sensor is typically installed at the wheel's hub or brake assembly. It consists of two components:

  • Reluctor wheel or tone ring: Located on the axle, this rotates with the wheel.
  • Magnetic or hall effect sensor: Sends the data to the ABS control module.

Symptoms of a Failing ABS Wheel Speed Sensor

The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) sensor monitors wheel speed. Common failure symptoms include:

  • ABS Light On
  • Brake Pulsing
  • No / Erratic Traction or Stability Control
  • No / Erratic ABS Operation
  • Braking Without Pedal Contact

Causes of ABS sensor failure

Whilst ABS sensors are a simple and generally robust part, their location on the vehicle makes them subject to harsh conditions and so the following causes are common:

  • Physical damage to sensor from road debris
  • Sensor out of position (or increased distance from wheel bearing)
  • Breaks in wiring
  • Internal short circuits
  • Heavy contamination
  • Corroded, cracked or swollen ABS ring
  • ABS ring blocked, damaged, missing teeth or windows

How to Replace the ABS Wheel Speed Sensor

Replacing an ABS sensor is usually a fairly straightforward task. The following steps will give you an idea of what the job usually involves.

Note: The following are general guidelines for educational and entertainment purposes only. Consult your vehicle’s factory information for specific repair instructions and recommended safety procedures.

Remove the old ABS sensor

  1. Put on your safety glasses.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Safely raise and support the vehicle using a jack and jack stands. Set the parking brake and chock the rear wheels. Disconnect the electrical connector from the ABS sensor harness.
  4. Use a ratchet to remove the ABS sensor retaining bolt. You’ll also want to remove any fasteners holding the sensor’s wiring harness in place.
  5. Remove the ABS sensor from the vehicle.
  6. Compare the new ABS sensor to the old ABS sensor to ensure that both are the same design.

Install the new ABS sensor.

  1. Reinstall the ABS sensor retaining bolt, along with any wiring harness retaining fasteners. Use a torque wrench to tighten all fasteners to the manufacturer’s specification.
  2. Reconnect the ABS sensor electrical connector.
  3. Safely remove the jack stands and lower the vehicle.
  4. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
  5. Use a scan tool or code reader to clear any related diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs).
