A large Himalayan Buddhist Mandala Thangka, a complex meditation diagram used in Vajrayana Tantric Buddhism. Mid-20th c.
A Tibetan Buddhist mandala thangka depicting a complex tantric palace diagram, likely associated with the Vajradhatu or Kalachakra tradition, painted in mineral pigments on cloth and mounted within its original silk brocade frame.
The composition centres on a sacred geometric mandala, formed as a square palace within a circular cosmogram, symbolising the enlightened universe. Within the mandala are finely rendered deity forms, now softly worn with age, surrounded by directional gateways and ritual motifs integral to advanced Vajrayana meditation practice.
Above, rows of seated lineage figures emerge from cloud forms, representing the transmission of tantric teachings, while below, three wrathful protector deities sit within flaming aureoles, guarding the sacred space. A kneeling donor figure in traditional dress appears at the periphery, indicating devotional commissioning.
Dating to the mid-20th century, the thangka retains its original silk brocade mount, with floral-patterned borders characteristic of Tibetan and Nepalese workshop production of the period. The painting, however, may indeed be earlier but mounted later, a common Tibetan practice.
A compelling and authentic example of tantric Buddhist art valued not for decorative narrative but for its symbolic and meditative depth.
Age-related wear, surface abrasion and fading consistent with use and devotional handling. Brocade with losses. Please look carefully at the images as they form part of the description.
