A large hand-painted Tibetan thangka depicting a serene central Buddha or enlightened master engaged in a traditional teaching scene. Mid-late 20th c.
A hand-painted Himalayan Buddhist thangka depicting a serene central Buddha or enlightened master seated in meditation, surrounded by celestial attendants and offering figures within a richly symbolic landscape.
The composition presents a traditional teaching or lineage scene, with the central figure holding a ritual bowl and seated upon a lotus throne, framed by clouds and floral motifs, with subsidiary figures representing devotion, offering, and the transmission of wisdom.
Painted on canvas using traditional techniques and mounted in a traditional cloth surround, this piece reflects the enduring visual language of Tibetan Buddhist devotional art, where thangkas serve as aids to meditation and spiritual contemplation.
The work displays a lively palette of mineral-inspired colours, with expressive figures depicted in a slightly naïve / folk style, and a dynamic arrangement typical of Himalayan workshop traditions.
It likely dates to mid-late 20th century, 1970-1990. Although the painting may indeed be earlier but mounted later, a common Tibetan practice.
Visible age-related wear including creasing, minor paint loss, and staining to the textile mount, consistent with ritual use and handling.
A striking and atmospheric example of Buddhist devotional art, ideal for display or collection. Please look carefully at the images as they form part of the description.
