Classic Mariners Games: Randy Johnson Fans 16 in Three-Hit Shutout of Toronto
On his way to claiming the 1995 American League Cy Young Award, one of Randy Johnson’s most dominant starts of the season came on July 15 against the Blue Jays at the Kingdome. Johnson worked a complete game and struck out 16 while allowing only 3 singles in the Mariners 3–0 win over Toronto.  The left-hander retired eight batters in a row to start the game, only allowing a two-out single to Domingo Cedeno in the top of the 3rd inning.  Johnson ran into trouble in the top of the 6th inning, giving up a one-out single to Cedeno and issuing back-to-back two-out walks to Paul Molitor and Roberto Alomar. But he bounced back to get Joe Carter to pop out to Tino Martinez in foul territory to end the threat.  The Big Unit cruised from there to his second of three shutouts in 1995. He struck out the side in the 7th and 8th innings, fanning six batters in a row. It was also his 4th of six complete games that season.  Johnson’s 16 strikeouts were a season-high in a 1995 campaign in which he led the AL with 294 strikeouts. Of his 16 punchouts that night against the Blue Jays, 14 were swinging strikeouts while 2 were caught looking.  Edgar Martinez reached base three times, drawing two walks and recording an RBI-double in the bottom of the 1st. The Mariners added two runs in the bottom of the 5th on RBI-singles from Mike Blowers and Doug Strange.
