1992 Nike “Just Do It” Women’s Campaign Print Advertisement

2-page spread from People Magazine, 1992

Featuring Nike Supreme Court Jacquard Bodysuit & Skort + Air Courtlite Tennis Shoe

A two-page vintage print advertisement from Nike’s groundbreaking early-1990s women’s “Just Do It” campaign — widely credited as one of the most culturally significant advertising campaigns in athletic marketing history.

The campaign, developed by Wieden+Kennedy’s all-women creative team (including legendary copywriter Janet Champ and art director Charlotte Moore), redirected athletic advertising away from the male-dominated celebrity-endorsement model and toward a women’s interior voice — direct, witty, sometimes ironic, often deeply observant.

This particular spread features the iconic copy:

“Oh you are so emotional and if you would like to wear your heart on your sleeve, no one has the right to stop you. But at least you can make sure they’re nice sleeves.”

An image of a female tennis player mid-backhand pairs with the women-focused copy, ending with the offer to call 1-800-642-1190 for the free “Nike Women’s Source Book” — a campaign that recognized women as a serious athletic audience years before competitors caught up.

Dimensions: Approximately 8.5” × 11” per page (2-page spread)

Condition: Very good — pages clean, no creases, suitable for framing. Light show-through from reverse page is characteristic of period newsprint and does not affect the front-side image quality.

Why this is culturally significant:

Nike’s early-90s women’s campaign is studied in advertising history courses and referenced in major industry retrospectives. It marked the moment athletic brands began speaking TO women, not at them. Janet Champ’s copy from this era is considered some of the finest direct-response advertising prose of the late 20th century.
