Vintage Southern Indian terracotta devotional sculpture of Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, prosperity, and good fortune. 20th century Folk Art from Puducherry.   1980's - 90s.

A richly coloured South Indian devotional sculpture depicting Lakshmi, the Hindu goddess of wealth, prosperity, and good fortune, shown here in her auspicious Gajalakshmi form.

She stands holding lotus flowers, symbols of purity and abundance, while the presence of the elephant at her side signifies royal power, fertility, and the life-giving force of water. This form of Lakshmi is especially associated with prosperity in the home and blessings for family and business life, and particularly significant during Diwali and Varalakshmi Vratham.

Originating from the Puducherry / Tamil Nadu region, the figure is mould-formed before  being painted in vivid polychrome, showing clear hand-finishing in the facial features and painted detailing. Signs of wear and handling indicate authentic devotional in a domestic shrine setting over time, adding to its authenticity and character.

Terracotta statues such as these are widely sought after for display in boutique hotels and contemporary interiors, as demonstrated at Villa Helena in Puducherry. LAST THREE IMAGES.
