Vintage Wooden Sumo Gunbai

Description

About This Item

  1. This is  a rare and vintage wooden Gunbai, a traditional Japanese Sumo referee's fan, dating back to the 1990s. In the world of professional Sumo, the Gunbai is a sacred tool used by the Gyoji (referee) to direct the matches, making it a powerful symbol of Japanese martial arts, authority, and tradition. This particular piece is an exceptional collector's item featuring striking calligraphy and historical significance. The front displays the classic golden sun and moon motifs alongside the deeply philosophical phrase "Ichimi Seifu" (Pure Wind of One Taste). This face is completed with the signature of Shonosuke, representing Kimura Shonosuke, the absolute highest and most prestigious rank for a Sumo referee. The reverse side is what makes this item truly extraordinary for sports memorabilia collectors. It boldly bears the names of four legendary Yokozuna (Grand Champions) who completely defined the golden eras of the sport: Tochinishiki, Wakanohana, Wajima, and Kitanoumi. The fan is meticulously crafted from beautiful natural wood and includes its original long red decorative tassel, adding an elegant touch to its powerful presence. Measuring 36.5cm in total length, it is perfectly sized for an impressive display in any room or dojo. As a vintage item from the 1990s, it remains in wonderful condition, with the natural warmth of the wood and minor historical aging simply enhancing its authentic character.
