Rare Antique Silver Coin Brooch with 1/40 Qirsh,
c1912.
The
brooch is holding an Egyptian 1/40 Qirsh bronze coin from the reign of Sultan
Mehmed V Resad. The coin is dated to the Islamic (Hijri) year 1327,
corresponding to roughly 1909-13 AD, the coin is approx. 2cm in diameter.
The silver
‘cart wheel’ brooch mount with a simple C clasp was initially designed to hold
coins to coins or medals to celebrate various milestones in Queen Victoria’s
reign. To turn or swap the coin, you simply open the pin, then pinch in the
V-shaped restraining mechanism, the coin can then be turned over or swapped for
another or replaced with other keepsakes. The back is embossed ‘SILVER’.
The
brooch is in excellent antique condition, it measures approx. 2.4cm in diameter
and weighs 5.7g including the coin.
A rare
collectable brooch.
