Black Phoenix is the apotheosis of decades of Rich Tommaso honing his comics craft. Starting from an early career influenced by indie and underground luminaries, then having a minor hit with Spy Seal, influenced by bande dessinee, he eventually rolled in all manner of genre comics, leaning especially heavy on the ‘50s and ‘60s and brought it all together in BLACK PHOENIX, published like an anthology of romance, humor, mystery, and horror comics, including ads and supplementary material. He has yet to receive his reward of indie superstardom for delivering such a complete package to sit on a shelf with Clowes or Harkham. Delightful stuff.
