Description:

A rare find is the antique dated 1833 Josiah Loring celestial globe on zodiac stand with brass meridian ring. Josiah Loring globes were produced in Boston, Massachusetts, starting in 1832, making this one of the earliest examples of American-made globes. Loring was a key figure in the 19th-century Boston school of globe making.

The globe we have here is as follows; LORING'S CELESTIAL GLOBE Containing all the known Stars, Nebulae &c Compiled from the Works of WOLLASTON, FLAMSTEED, DE LA CAILLE, HEVELIUS, MAYER, BRADLEY, HERSCHEL, MASKELYNE The Transactions of the ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY of LONDON &c. &c. From Smith's New English Globe Boston, Josiah Loring, 136 Washington St. 1833 A fine 12-inch (30.5cm.) diameter celestial table globe made up of twelve hand-coloured engraved gores laid to the ecliptic poles. The equatorial graduated in degrees, hours and minutes, the four colures graduated in degrees. The ecliptic graduated in days of the month and of the houses of the Zodiac, the constellations depicted by mythical beasts and figures and scientific instruments. The stars shown to nine orders of magnitude with nebulae, and variously labelled, a note beneath the cartouche explaining N.B. Greek letters or figures pre fixed to the Stars refer to the British Catalogue, a stroke under the Figures thus __ to De La Caille, H.Hevelius, M.Mayer, CH.Herschel, B.Bradley &c., with printed hour dial at North Pole with brass pointer and engraved brass meridian circle, the stained red horizon with paper ring graduated in degrees in both directions, days of the month and of houses of the Zodiac with names, sigils and pictures, on four baluster turned mahogany legs and turned cross-stretchers.

Measures approx.; 12" diameter globe, stand 16 3/4" diameter, overall 18" tall.

Condition:

The globe is missing a piece of surface gesso and paper covering on one side about 1 1/2" x 1", there are spiders to the paper radiating from the white spot damage, the globe in that area is hard, not softened from the damage. It is structurally very sound, it can be surface filled and restored. The paper has tanned to a mellow patina, some small spot staining, light mottling effect to tanned paper, overall it displays very well, very legible. The stand has some wear to the paper labeling and small spot staining, small wood checks and ring has a small split about 1 1/2" it's interior. Overall a great estate fresh find!
