From what I can tell, Mark Burrier is no longer making comics and appears to be focused on design work, which is a loss for the comics world, yet at the same time, I’m not surprised. The two mini-comics I saw from Burrier were perfectly designed, both the publications themselves and the pages of comics within. At Odds reproduces short stories that were originally in other publications and it looks to me that they cover a number of years, like the story “Some People Are Trying To Read” which Burrier uses one panel to create a cover from. The design is improved with a careful selection of color rather than the greyscale on the inside, and this story is from 2011, so I think it’s one of the latest in the book.
Simple, straightforward one panel comics (jokes and not jokes) with one panel per page, this real strength of this mini is the tremendous design of the object itself. Nicely printed pages covered with nicely weighted cardstock, he uses a design pattern of a figure from the book to fill the end pages. The comics build to a similar head, layering the variations on a theme until it feels like a story was built out of these flashes of interaction. Spectacular comics from someone who ended up in design more than illustration, but used it to great effect here.
CONDITION DESCRIPTION: NM Nice copies. Both are flat and clean. The dark color covers show the very smallest flaws. There are some tiny edge grinds. (Grading is based on a careful examination of the flaws.)
