・吉口桂堂 Yoshiguchi Keido
1888–1987
Born in Gifu Prefecture
Abbot of Zuiho-in, Daitoku-ji
509th Abbot of Daitoku-ji
Though small in stature, he lived a long life; it seems he did not eat meat. He reportedly enjoyed drinking sake, drinking tea, and writing calligraphy. His daily routine consisted of chanting sutras and cleaning. He passed away in 1987 at the age of 99.

Sen no Rikyu,
The name of Sen no Rikyu (1522-91), the founder of the Sen family, holds an important place not only in the world of tea ceremony but also in Japanese history.
As the tea instructor to the powerful figures Oda Nobunaga (1534-82) and Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537-98), he established himself as the greatest tea master in Japan and played a central role in Momoyama culture.
The tea ceremony thus came to be deeply rooted in the traditions of Japanese culture.
The Omotesenke family, as the main branch that carries on this lineage, has upheld its ancient traditions and is currently led by the 15th headmaster, Yuusai.
Rikyu's Way of Tea
The "wabi-cha" that Rikyu idealized is not about beauty that is directly seen with the eyes, but rather a beauty that can be appreciated with a spirit that seeks an aesthetic state and inner fulfillment within its atmosphere—in other words, a beauty seen with the heart, not the eyes. Influenced by Zen Buddhism and Waka poetry, "wabi-cha," which was uniquely perfected in the Japanese climate and culture, forms the underlying current of the Omotesenke school of tea ceremony.
