Founded by Allen Lane in 1935, Penguin Books altered the publishing industry by introducing high quality, affordable paperbacks. The original logo was sketched by Edward Young, a junior employee dispatched to London Zoo to observe and draw the birds in their enclosure. This simple design became the face of a brand that made literature accessible to a wider public market.
Over the decades, the emblem underwent several refinements. In 1947, the typographer Jan Tschichold modified the bird to ensure it reproduced cleanly across millions of covers. The combination of this distinct logo, the strict typographic grid system, and the familiar colour coded spines, such as orange for fiction and green for crime, firmly cemented the publisher's visual identity in British households.
The brand represents a significant chapter in twentieth century design and literary history. This piece captures the classic silhouette of the recognised bird, offering a physical tribute to the publisher. It provides a straightforward reference to the paperback era, making it a fitting addition to accompany a curated bookshelf or reading space.
Approx 5" tall with a unique textured surface, this 3D printed model is made from high-quality, recyclable PLA, both lightweight and durable, making it an ideal display piece.
Please note that as each piece is made to order, there may be slight variations in colour and finish.
