Antique Brass Extending Telescope
c.1850+
A very
interesting Victorian Brass Four Draw Telescope extending to 32inches (81cm)
It is
actually a three draw telescope with a front draw which extends approximately
three inches (7.6cm) over the lens.
This
front draw acts as a sun shield and a dew shield, to keep sun glare away and to
prevent condensation, also it allows clearer focus on very distant objects e.g.
a sailing ship on the distant horizon.
This
telescope has no markings on it that I can find however I think it is a
Marine/Military telescope and possibly has a Broad Arrow mark on the barrel
under the leather/snake skin.
I have
had no problems focusing this telescope with and without my glasses.
Measures: 10in (25cm) long x 2in (5cm)
diameter.
Extends
to 32in (81.3cm)
Weight: 670g.
CONDITION: In fairly good original used condition
and showing wear consistent with age and use.
The Brass telescope is in quite good condition, the third draw is
quite tight, the second draw less so and the first draw less so again.
The leather/snake skin binding is quite worn from use.
Remnants of a leather strap are on the barrel.
A couple of spots on the lens which don't seem to affect function.
All in all a good collector's item needing a little TLC and being
sold
'As Found'.
