A striking example of Victorian majolica at its finest, this Minton jardinière exemplifies the Aesthetic Movement's fascination with Japonesque design. The deep cobalt blue body is boldly decorated with applied bamboo leaves in vivid green, while the rim, side handles, and four bracket feet are rendered in richly glazed ochre to simulate bamboo stalks — a virtuoso display of the modeler's craft. The interior is glazed in a brilliant turquoise, creating a dramatic contrast with the dark exterior.
The underside retains what appears to be a painted pattern or potter's number in manganese brown, consistent with Minton factory practice, along with crazing to the base glaze typical of age and authentic to the period. Some minor wear and small glaze chips are noted to the base, commensurate with 140+ years of use.
Minton was at the forefront of the majolica revival, producing some of the most technically accomplished and vibrantly colored earthenware of the 19th century. This jardinière, with its bold palette and Japanese-inspired bamboo motifs, would have been a fashionable centerpiece in a Victorian drawing room or conservatory.
Condition: Good antique condition. Minor base wear. Glaze crazing throughout consistent with age.
