・藤井誡堂 Fuji Kaido
Fujii Kaidō (1898–1984)
515th Abbot of Daitoku-ji, 22nd Head of Daitoku Hōshun-in, and Head Priest of Sanzen-in, a sub-temple of Daitoku-ji
From the postwar period onward, he devoted himself to the restoration of Daitoku-ji alongside Zui’en and Unso.
He possessed a particularly deep understanding of tea ceramics and, by instructing Kyoto potters, made
significant contributions to the revival of the Edo-period Murasakino-yaki style.
He produced numerous tea bowls, tea scoops, and tea hanging scrolls of his own design, and was one of the most popular successive abbots of Daitoku-ji in tea ceremonies.
・歳月不待人 (Time waits for no one)
These words appear in a section of a Chinese poem by Tao Yuanming, a scholar from the late 4th to 5th centuries, specifically in one of his twelve untitled poems titled “Miscellaneous Poems,” which he composed spontaneously.
Tao Yuanming wrote these poems around the age of 50, expressing his thoughts on the remainder of his life.
So, what exactly is Tao Yuanming saying in this poem? This poem is a five-character classical poem, a long poem consisting of 12 lines.
“Time waits for no one” is the final line.
人生無根蔕 Human life has no firm foundation, like the roots of a tree or the stem of a fruit;
飄如陌上塵 it is like dust on the road, swirling aimlessly through the air.
分散逐風転 Blown hither and thither by the wind,
此已非常身 this body no longer retains its original form.
落地為兄弟 Since we’re all born into this world, we’re all like brothers and sisters.
何必骨肉親 There’s absolutely no need to limit that to just blood relatives.
得歓当作楽 When you’re happy, enjoy yourself to your heart’s content.
斗酒聚比隣 Stock up on plenty of sake and have a drink with your neighbors.
盛年不重来 Youth does not come again
一日難再晨 Morning does not come twice in a day
及時当勉励 We should cherish every moment and strive to improve
歳月不待人 For time waits for no one
