Peace – 1893 Photogravure after Walter L. Dean
A 19th-century American heliogravure after Peace
by marine painter Walter L. Dean (1854–1912). The composition depicts the White
Squadron at rest in harbor, with the central warship shown bow-on and
additional naval vessels anchored in the distance. Dean was a noted American
marine painter, and his large painting Peace (The White Squadron in Boston
Harbor) was exhibited at the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition and later
acquired for the U.S. House collection.
This print is inscribed “Copyright 1893 by Walter L.
Dean” at lower left, “Peace” at lower center, “Photogravure Goupil” at lower
right, and “D. Appleton & Co New York” below.
The sheet is in poor condition. It shows toning and
foxing throughout, with remnant tape marks on the verso. Please refer to the
pictures for condition.
