RAY WESLEY 1935 - EAGLE & SEA LION CEDAR WOOD
CARVING SIGNED AND INSCRIBED CIRC.1960s
Ray Wesley artist, artisan jewellery maker, silkscreen
printer. A Tsimshian First Nations Native Indian born on January 19, 1935 in
Port Essington, British Columbia. Wesley began working in the 1960's under the
tutelage of Wilfred Stevenson, primarily producing wood carvings, then followed
silver and gold jewellery designs, with a further foray in to creating silkscreen
prints. In the early 1970s Wesley was commissioned by the Alumni Association of
Simon Fraser University to create two totem poles which now stand either side the
entrance of the Office of Aboriginal Peoples.
