Japan, Edo Period, 17th–18th century
A powerful and visually arresting hanging scroll depicting Aizen Myōō, the Wisdom King of Passion and Desire, rendered in rich pigments and gold on silk. Seated majestically on a lotus pedestal rising from a jewel-encrusted base, Aizen’s six arms bear ritual implements including a bow, arrow, vajra, and lotus, symbolizing his role in transforming earthly passions into spiritual awakening.
With a fearsome red visage, third eye, and a crown adorned with a roaring lion, Aizen is enveloped in a flaming aureole—a symbol of purification and energy. His expression, both wrathful and compassionate, embodies his function as a protector of esoteric Buddhist practices, particularly within the Shingon and Tendai traditions.
This scroll is set in a later brocade mounting of deep black and gold silk, respectfully preserving the central thangka-style composition. Areas of wear and restoration reveal the age and devotional use of the piece, likely once enshrined in a temple or private altar.
