During the Tokugawa shogunate, in addition to the coins minted by the Shogun, feudal lords issued an early kind of banknote called bill or scrip (hansatsu in Japanese) to be used within their domains. These usually had a face value in silver coinage (more rarely in gold and copper) or was marked for exchange for commodities such as rice.

After the Meiji restoration, the han system of feudal domains was abolished but the Emperor allowed for all Hansatsu to be exchanged for the new national currency up until 1879.
