Antique Stoneware Crock
Salt Glazed and Decorated
Cobalt Blue on Brown Design

For your Stoneware or American Pottery Collection-CrockOld5

Details

  • Description: A beautiful nice size stoneware salt glazed antique crock. This salt glazed stoneware piece is decorated with a cobalt blue over brown and grayish background with a primitive looking floral and foliate design along the circumference of the exterior near the crock’s shoulder. The crock has a circular flat base with outwards flared sides rising to a shoulder delineated with two parallel incised lines. The shoulder is supporting a short neck ending in a formed rim on top. The inside is also glazed with brown colored background. The piece is obviously a handmade wheel thrown piece judging from the look of the inside which shows the forming lines. Please carefully review the photos as they are part and parcel of the description.

  • Date: Uncertain but most likely some time during the 1800s (19th century).

  • Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Southern New Jersey.

  • Size: Measures ~4 3/8" diameter at the base, ~3 3/4" diameter at the top, and is ~6 1/2" high. The piece weighs a bit over two pounds and four ounces.

  • Maker: Unknown.

  • Marks: Unmarked.

  • Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a very well made and very nice typical Americana piece of stoneware. The piece which we believe could be 100 years old has nice color, shape, a nice decorative design, and is in very good condition. A beautiful piece deserving a prominent spot in any stoneware pottery or American pottery collection.

  • Condition: Excellent condition with no cracks, repairs, chips, hairlines, or crazing to the glaze. The piece has a few manufacturing defects to the surface, which are more obvious in the colored spots. In addition, the piece has a small pop on top of the rim where it appears as a small round shallow hole. Moreover, the piece coloration is brown and dark gray as can be seen clearly in the photos. All of these issues appear to all be original to the making, which you can expect in such primitive pieces of pottery from the past. These truly do not affect the looks or the quality of the piece and give the piece great character. Finally, as is the case with all these primitive pottery pieces, the piece has an additional few of the usual defects you would expect such as pops, unglazed areas and uneven spots. A great looking piece in great condition after being around for a long time. Please see photos to appreciate the quality, beauty and condition of this great piece.
