Black and Yellow Colors
For Your American Folk Art Collection-Grosbeak1
Details
Description: A beautiful hand carved wood and polychrome painted American Folk-Art decorative Figurine of a bird. The carving is of a bird, we believe it to be a Black Headed Grosbeak, standing on a small round brown colored base. Its legs are made of thin metal rods. The bird is carved from one piece of wood and shows carved details of the end of its wings, its eyes, its beak and tail. It is painted in black and yellow with the wings having white colored highlights. There is also white below the eyes and below the tail. The carving shows a very good facsimile of a black headed grosbeak bird. The bird is not signed or dated, but it was obviously made by an accomplished folk art carver. Just a wonderful and nicely done piece of American Folk Art to add to your folk art and Americana Collection. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: The piece is not dated but we estimate it was made in the late 1900s.
Origin: Purchased at an estate auction in Lancaster County Pennsylvania.
Size: The bird is ~5" long, ~3 1/4" at its highest, and is ~1 7/8" at its widest. The piece weighs slightly over 2 ounces.
Maker: Unknown.
Marks: Unmarked.
Distinguishing Characteristics - Most Interesting About The Piece: Truly a nice and unusual piece of Americana, which would make a worthy addition to your collection of American Folk Art.
Condition: The carving is in very good condition, with no breaks, cracks, losses, or repairs. It does have minor scratches and some losses to the paint, especially at the tip of the beak and the edges of the wings and tail as well as the top of the wing. It also has a few minor nicks, but truly nothing of concern. Please see photos for additional condition information.
