Original WWI U.S. Army M1917 steel helmet, featuring a striking hand-painted Field Artillery crossed cannons motif with “145” marking on the front. The helmet retains a desirable aged patina throughout, with honest surface wear consistent with age and storage. The painted insignia adds strong visual appeal and displays very well, making it an excellent piece for collectors of U.S. military history and World War I artifacts.
Both the helmet shell and liner are consistent with original WWI-period components, matching known examples in construction and materials. The painted decoration, while showing characteristics of period-style application, is offered as probably a later application and/or possibly enhanced or restored at some point. It remains an attractive and well-executed design that complements the piece.
This is an historical artifact from the First World War era, and therefore shows natural wear and tear resulting from age and regular use during the period.
