The DShMG is an airborne assault maneuver group of the USSR KGB border troops. They operated during the Soviet war in Afghanistan (1979–1989) and were one of the most combat-ready units.

These groups were created for rapid response, reconnaissance, ambushes and combat raids in hard-to-reach areas - in the mountains, deserts and on border routes. They hunted down enemy units, blocked weapons supply routes, conducted reconnaissance and sweeps. They could quickly land from helicopters at the right point and disappear just as quickly.

The DShMG consisted of experienced fighters, often after additional special training. They had modern weapons for that time, carried light equipment and operated in small mobile groups.

Service in the DShMG was considered very dangerous and difficult, but also honorable. These fighters had great authority among other units, because they often performed the riskiest tasks on the front line.
