Karuta – A Japanese Card Game

Karuta which is name of sets of cards used a card matching game in Japan. Two different types of Karuta cards are used for the game.
One is the Yomifuda (reading cards) and the other is the Torifuda (playing cards). Recently it has become famous even in manga (chihayafuru)


In karuta, one player reads the writing on a card, and the others try to be first to spot the card with the picture that matches. This game has long been enjoyed by families and friends, but it gained a new face with the recent popularity of competitive karuta. Competition cards feature 100 famous poems from an ancient collection called Hyakunin Isshu.


It’s a contest of speed as well as memory, and we’ll watch a national champion spot her card in just 0.2s. The old poems also provide an introduction to Japanese culture, another attraction for the growing number of players who are now taking up this game around the world.

How to :

Vintage Japanese Hyakunin Isshu Wooden Tile Poetry Guessing Game. This was a popular game played by aristocrats and geisha. The aim is to read the tile and guess the poem.


To play Hyakunin Isshu karuta, someone reads out a poem, and a player must identify the card—faster than the opponents—with only the second half of the poem displayed on it, just by listening to the first half of the poem. In the modern era, the game evolved into a more formalized style of play known as "competitive karuta," where two players race head-to-head. In competitive karuta, not only do you need to know all of the poems by heart, but you also need excellent visual, listening and concentration skills, as well as stamina.


Contrary to its image as a beautiful poetry game, competitive karuta is a tough game, often likened to the martial arts. The cards are laid out on the tatami mat floor, and the players face each other across the cards. As soon as the reader begins to read a poem, the players, quick as a flash, identify the corresponding card. The player slaps the card with his or her hand producing a resounding thud, and sometimes the card flips dramatically up into the air.
