TOPEKA, Kan., Nov. 26 —Former President Harry S. Truman will dedicate a new bank building Sunday at the south edge of Topeka. It is being opened by Mrs. Georgia Neese Gray, whom he appointed as the first woman Treasurer of the United States in 1949.
Mrs. Gray is relocating and renaming the bank, of which she is president. The bank, founded in 1892 by her father, Albert Neese, is moving here from the village of Richland, about 14 miles southeast.
The bank until now has been in the rear of the general merchandise store that Mr. Neese founded with his brother, Frank Neese. When Frank Neese died in 1898, Mrs. Gray's father took on full operation until his death in 1937. At that time Mrs. Gray took charge of the bank, store and other business interests in the community.
Albert Neese's daughter in 1949, Georgia Neese Gray became the first woman U.S. treasurer. An actor, banker, trailblazer, and Kansan, her passion and work ethic will continue to inspire generations of young Kansans to work hard and chase their dreams.
