Up for auction is a beautiful, authentic piece of Victorian photographic history. This lot includes an original Underwood & Underwood "Perfecscope" Stereoviewer and a substantial collection of 58 stereoview cards. This set offers a fascinating "3D" window into the world as it was at the turn of the 20th century, ranging from educational world tours to humorous domestic scenes. The Underwood & Underwood Stereoviewer is stamped Oct. 15, 1895. Excellent antique condition. The aluminum hood features intricate engraved scrollwork and the original velvet light-shielding trim (showing light vintage wear consistent with age). The folding wooden handle and sliding card adjustment are fully functional. The glass lenses are clear and provide a sharp 3D image.
The Cards: 58 Antique Stereoviews This collection features a diverse mix of "Real Photo" cards from top publishers like Underwood & Underwood and Keystone View Company. Highlights include: • The Holy Land Series: Multiple cards documenting Palestine/Israel (c. 1899-1904), including the House of Simon the Tanner and the Wilderness of the Scapegoat. • Narrative "Story" Sets: Includes several cards from the popular "Honeymoon" series and humorous Victorian genre scenes. • Global Industry & Ethnography: Fascinating views of the early silk industry, shrines in Russia, and American landmarks like the Great Salt Lake. This is a collective mix and I have taken images of more interesting cards. Most cards are in good condition with sharp imagery and typical vintage toning. Some show minor corner wear or light foxing, which is expected for ephemera over 120 years old.
