TSUBA Samurai Sword guard Japanese Katana Blade antique Art

Made in JAPAN!

This is an authentic Japanese sword Tsuba purchased from an elderly couple who are long-time collectors in Fukuoka, Kyushu, Japan.

This piece comes from the collection of a dedicated enthusiast. Due to the husband's serious illness, his wife decided to part with his cherished collection to organize their affairs, which is how it came into my hands.

This Tsuba features a bold, high-relief (Taka-bori) carving of Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism, on an iron plate.

Design: The striking design highlights his intense, wide eyes and the flowing lines of the hood covering his head. The subtle glint of gold in his eyes is achieved through "Kin-zogan" (gold inlay), emphasizing Bodhidharma’s sharp and piercing gaze.

Symbolism: Bodhidharma is a symbol of resilience, famously associated with the proverb "Nana-korobi Ya-oki" (Fall seven times, stand up eight). For the Samurai, this motif represented an "unwavering resolve" in both battle and spiritual training, making it a highly auspicious and favored design.
