Vintage 1948 RCA Victor "Globe-Trotter" Model 8BX6 Portable Tube Radio
Up for sale is a classic piece of Mid-Century Modern industrial design: the RCA Victor Model 8BX6 "Globe-Trotter" portable AM radio. Manufactured in the late 1940s (circa 1948–1949), this model is highly sought after by collectors for its iconic "lunchbox" style, featuring a brushed aluminum front and durable dark Bakelite sides.
Condition & Functionality:
- Power: The unit powers on when the cylindrical dial cover is opened.
- Sound: When powered, the speaker produces audible static and line noise.
- Tuning: The tuning dial rotates smoothly; however, I am unable to pick up any clear radio stations at this time. It likely requires a standard electronic restoration (such as replacing old capacitors) to return to full working order.
- Cosmetic: The handle is intact, and the dial cover slides as intended. Some staining and discoloration on case.
Technical Specifications:
- Model: 8BX6 (Chassis RC-1040C/D)
- Type: 6-Tube Superheterodyne AM Receiver
- Power Source: Dual-powered; uses a standard AC power cord (included) or vintage 90V/9V batteries (not included).
- Dimensions: Approximately 13" x 9.5" x 5.5"
- Style: Industrial / Mid-Century Modern / Art Deco
