[ Robust Wings That Earned the Trust of Allied Pilots ] The Grumman F4F Wildcat is known as a masterpiece carrier-based fighter of the U.S. Navy during World War II. Among its variants, the aircraft manufactured by General Motors' Eastern Aircraft Division during the middle of the war were designated as the FM-1. By reducing the wing-mounted machine guns from six to four, the FM-1 was able to carry an increased amount of ammunition. The first aircraft was completed in August 1942, and it was also adopted by the British Royal Navy as the Martlet Mk.V. Its excellent takeoff and landing performance made it ideal for operations on small escort carriers, where it fought valiantly in anti-submarine patrols and convoy escort missions. Thanks to its rugged construction and high reliability, it remained in heavy use until the end of the war.
