This “Ottawa” January 2nd, 1900, Dominion of
Canada Twenty-Five Cents has a black and white frame with decorative shapes. These
notes are also known as fractional currency or “Shinplaster” notes. The front
of the note has a black on light brown multicolor underprint. On the top left,
the inscription "The Dominion of Canada" along with the value of the
note "25" & "TWENTY-FIVE CENTS" as well as the date and
signature. The central vignette shows an allegory of a seated Britannia wearing
a helmet while holding a shield and a trident, with a sailing ship in the
background. The note is signed by John Mortimer Courtney, Deputy Minister of
Finance. At the bottom, the banknote printer. On the reverse there are three
overlapping guilloche designs with text superimposed and the value of the
banknote "25 CENTS". These notes were issued from 1900 until 1923, and
these banknotes do not have a serial number. The design on the back was reused
for the 1923 issue of 25cents notes. It is a highly sought-after item among
collectors of paper money from around the world. The banknote is in circulated
condition and is a valuable addition to any collection of Canadian paper money
and is sure to impress even the most discerning of collectors. There are no
tears or pinholes.
