This was in my Sailor's Valentine collection. Although my other items were all shell art, I definitely consider this to be a good example of a sailor's sweetheart gift, circa 1900-1910. It's a 6 1/4" x 8 1/4" x 1 1/4" handmade keepsake box made in the likeness of a book. The spine is Philippine mahogany, while the covers are one of the regional exotic hardwoods, with a very nice grain. The "pages" of the book resemble pine. Hand-carved with a woman's name "Luetta" and "P I".  Photos have some glare - I need to revamp my lighting setup.
