Aurelian ruled during the Crisis of the Third Century, a time when the empire faced invasions, rebellions, and breakaway states. In a short reign, he led major campaigns that reunified the Roman Empire—including the reconquest of the Palmyrene Empire in the east and the Gallic Empire in the west—earning lasting fame as a “restorer” of Roman unity. He is also associated with major defensive projects such as the Aurelian Walls at Rome.
