Vertigo Records was launched in 1969 by Philips Records as a dedicated outlet for the rapidly evolving underground music scene. Spearheaded by creative director Olav Wyper, the label was designed to compete with rival progressive imprints and provided a crucial platform for the burgeoning hard rock and jazz fusion movements. It launched iconic, boundary pushing albums by artists like Black Sabbath, Colosseum, and Gentle Giant. Vertigo blended experimental artistry with incredibly high production values, setting it apart from the strictly pop oriented outputs that dominated the mainstream music industry of the late 1960s.

The visual identity of the label was highly unusual for its time and instantly recognizable. Rather than relying on standard corporate typography, the early Vertigo releases utilized a striking black and white swirl design that covered the entire A-side of the vinyl. Conceived by Wyper and executed by the in-house art team of Linda Glover and Mike Stanford, this hypnotic spiral created a dizzying optical illusion when spinning on a turntable. This brilliant visual consistency helped Vertigo releases stand out and fostered an immediate sense of progressive credibility. The logo was not just a company trademark; it became a sign of uncompromising quality for music fans who championed the complex, album oriented rock of the era.

The label's bold aesthetic and lavish packaging brought it wider attention beyond the usual music press. Set against the backdrop of late 1960s Britain, Vertigo operated with a fiercely creative spirit, frequently housing its records in elaborate gatefold sleeves designed by visionary artists like Marcus Keef. These innovations turned Vertigo Records into a prime example of how a major label could successfully nurture a niche, avant-garde audience without compromising the artistic integrity of its roster. The swirl label era was remarkably short lived, running only until 1973, which has since made these early pressings some of the most highly sought after treasures in vinyl collecting.
