Gilberto Gil's debut album, Louvação, was released in 1967 by Philips Records.

On the eve of the rise of Tropicália and the electric guitar, the Bahian artist's guitar takes center stage on tracks arranged by Carlos Monteiro e Souza, Dori Caymmi, and Leonardo Bruno.

Social, political, and religious issues transform into samba, bossa nova, carnival classics, and northeastern rhythms.

The title track “Louvacao” is an overwhelming collaboration with Torquato Neto, who also co-wrote the precocious, bittersweet, nostalgic baião “A rua.”

His passion for Bahia spreads like water in the lyrical “Beira-mar,” co-written with Caetano Veloso.

Equally poetic is “Lunik 9,” depicting the Soviet lunar probe's landing. “Perhaps the moonlight no longer illuminates my song,” he imagines.

In “Ensaio Geral,” he calls on youth for truth to triumph amidst carnival's political significance.

The collaboration with Torquato and Geraldo Vandre, “O Rancho da Rosa Vermelha,” evokes ancient festivals, while the bossa-infused samba masterpiece “Mancada” references samba schools.

The brilliant “Roda,” co-written with João Augusto, stands out for its rhythmic originality and critical lyrics.

“Viramundo,” co-written with Capinan, celebrates the resistance spirit of the Northeast, as does the nostalgic “Água dos Meninos.”

The simple “Maria (Me Perdoa, Maria)” weaves the album's romantic moments.

“Procissao,” depicting the faith and social contours of sertanejo, is one of Gilberto Gil's most beautiful and important songs, closing the album.

1LP color vinyl, single sleeve jacket.
