The Yamaha FG-400M is an early-1980s Made in Japan model from Yamaha’s well-regarded FG “D-series” period — a time known for consistent build quality, reliable materials, and a clear, well-balanced acoustic voice. These MIJ Yamaha acoustics are highly respected among players for their musicality, durability, and excellent value.
This FG-400M features a solid spruce top paired with nato back and sides, delivering a bright, articulate tone with good projection and clarity. The top is finished with distinctive green abalone-style fascia (purfling) around the body and soundhole, giving the guitar a tasteful vintage character that sets it apart from standard FG models.
It has been fully cleaned, polished, and freshly set up with comfortable, player-friendly action at approximately 2.5mm (low E) / 1.75mm (high E) at the 12th fret.
Condition is very good for its age. There is some cosmetic “whitening” visible on the back, a common ageing characteristic found on many vintage Yamaha finishes from this era. This is purely cosmetic, does not affect structure or tone, and in fact adds to the instrument’s authentic vintage appearance. No cracks, repairs, or structural issues. The neck is straight, frets are clean, and the guitar plays smoothly with a lively, responsive feel.
