1836 Cincinnati & Whitewater Canal Co $1 Obsolete Note Haxby OH-165 VG Offered here is an original 1836 obsolete canal company note issued by the Cincinnati & Whitewater Canal Company in the denomination of One Dollar. Notes issued by canal companies represent an early form of American private currency used to finance transportation infrastructure during the canal building era of the early 19th century. This note features an engraved landscape vignette depicting a canal scene with bridge and surrounding countryside. At the right side of the note is a detailed figure vignette, while the denomination counters appear in ornate medallions. The note is dated October 10, 1836, placing it within the period of rapid canal expansion throughout the Midwest prior to the Civil War. Condition Report - The note shows clear evidence of circulation consistent with its age. Paper exhibits moderate wear with multiple folds, creases, and toning visible throughout. The reverse shows additional staining and handling wear. Despite the circulation, the printed design and signatures remain legible and the overall structure of the note remains intact. Overall the note presents in Very Good (VG) condition.
