City Bank New Haven CT $10 Obsolete Banknote AU American Bank Note Co.

Offered here is a matched pair of original 19th century obsolete banknotes issued by the Farmington Bank in the denominations of One Dollar and Two Dollars.  These beautifully engraved notes feature classic American banknote artistry of the mid-19th century with detailed allegorical figures and strong red protector overprints used as an anti-counterfeiting device.  The $1 note displays a dramatic central vignette of a spread-wing American eagle flanked by allegorical female figures representing liberty and national strength. In the background is a finely engraved scene of the U.S. Capitol.  The $2 note features an attractive agricultural vignette depicting farmers and livestock, symbolizing prosperity and rural commerce, with classical allegorical figures at each side.  The notes were engraved by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson, one of the major engraving houses responsible for many U.S. obsolete banknotes and early currency designs prior to the National Banking era.  Both notes appear to be unsigned remainder notes, meaning they were printed but never issued into circulation. Remainders are highly collectible and are frequently found in superior preservation.  Details:  Farmington Bank – Farmington, New Hampshire Denominations: $1 and $2 Mid-19th century obsolete currency Classic allegorical and agricultural vignette engravings Bold red protector overprints Printed by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Edson Unsigned remainder examples  Obsolete banknotes from the free-banking era (roughly 1830–1865) remain popular with collectors for their historical significance and exceptional engraving quality.
