Details
Description: A early 20th century dark brown lead glazed redware milk bowl attributed to Henry Schofield Pottery in Cecil County Maryland. This glazed milk bowl has a flat round base with slightly outward sloped sides rising to a rolled rim. The bowl is encircled by a lightly incised line a third of the way from the top and has an impressed foot ring. The piece is glazed inside and out with the bottom being unglazed. The piece has the typical Schofield coarse brown lead glaze and dark brown/black foot ring. The piece also has the usual rough surface again typical of Schofield primitive pottery. A nice antique piece of redware from around the Mason-Dixon line. Please view photos carefully as they are part and parcel of our description.
Date: Uncertain, but sometime in the period of 1910-1925.
Origin: Cecil County Maryland along the Mason-Dixon line.
Size: The piece ~5" in diameter at the base, ~7" diameter at the top, and is ~3 3/4" high. The piece weighs over one and a half pounds.
Maker: Attributed to Henry Schofield Sr. of Schofield Pottery.
Marks: Unmarked.
Condition: The beaker is in good condition given its age. It has no crack, breaks, or repairs. The piece has overall crazing to the glaze, which given its coloring and the rough surface makes the crazing very hard to see. The piece has several glaze chips, which we try to show in the photos, mostly along the edge of the rim and a couple of smaller ones along the bottom edge. It also has several small shallow glaze flakes throughout the body of the piece. Other than that, the piece has several of the manufacturing defects you would expect in a primitive piece of redware of this vintage such as pops, slubs, areas where the glaze did not fully flow, unglazed spots, and uneven spots. All these issues can be seen in the photos and as can be seen do not distract from the beauty of the piece. Please see photos for additional condition information.
