דברי נגידים – פרוטוקול היסטורי על חירות היהודים בהולנד תחת כיבוש צרפת – אמשטרדם תקנ"ט [1799]

בשנת תקנ"ה [1795] אירעה הפיכה ברפובליקה ההולנדית, והיא נכבשה בידי מתנגדי השלטון יחד עם הצבא הצרפתי, ובמקומה הוקמה ה"רפובליקה הבטאווית", שהייתה למעשה מעין "מדינת חסות" של צרפת.
בעקבות המהפכה הוחלו חוקי חירות שוויוניים בין כלל חלקי העם, ונקבעה הפרדה בין המדינה הציבורית והדת הפרטית ("להבדיל דתי המדינה מדתי אמונה").
יהודי הרפובליקה - שמנו באותה העת כמה עשרות אלפי יהודים, חששו כי הפרדת הדת מהמדינה עשויה לפגוע בזכויות הקהילה היהודית, וכן נוכחו לראות כי חלק מהזכויות החדשות לא הוחלו על היהודים. על כן פנו לנבחרי הציבור הנוכריים בעניין, והם התכנסו בעיר האג לסדרת ישיבות העוסקות בנושא.
בסופו של דבר הדיון הוכרע לטובת היהודים, והונפק מסמך רשמי המאשר את זכויות היהודים: "פסק דין מדת השוויון ליהודים ככל התושבים" (דף סב ע"ב)
החיבור ההיסטורי שלפנינו מכיל תימלול של דברי נבחרי הציבור בישיבות, את פסק הדין הנ"ל, ואת חוקי הרפובליקה ("דתי האומה"). בראשו רקע קצר לתולדות המהפכה.
בעמוד האחרון מופיעה חתימת ידו (בלועזית) של המתרגם והמו"ל - ר' צבי הירש מרקוס מאילפעלד. תיקון בכת"י בדף עא ע"א.
שנים ספורות לאחר מכן - בשנת תקס"ו [1806] - הופלה הרפובליקה, ובמקומה הוקמה "ממלכת הולנד" הנפוליאונית, אולם רבים מחוקי השוויון נותרו על כנם.
חיבור לא מצוי ובעל חשיבות רבה לתולדות יהודי הולנד.

After a violent controversy, the national assembly of the Batavian Republic proclaimed the complete emancipation of the Jews on Sept. 2, 1796. The Author compares the situation to the Jew of America and France, mentioning Boston and Jewish population figures.

With an important introduction on ethics, various communal proclamations concerning communal institutions in The Hague as well as a listing of the translations of certain words. The sefer provides a wealth of information on the Dutch Jewish community written during its heyday.
