On June 2, 2010, Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga retired the first 26 batters in order and was poised to complete the 24th perfect game in MLB history. On what would’ve been the final out, a grounder to first was fielded cleanly, but first-base umpire Jim Joyce erroneously called the runner safe — a mistake he admitted postgame.
Despite the blown call, Galarraga calmly recorded the 28th out and completed a 3-0 shutout, ending with a one-hit game. The moment is now known as “The Imperfect Game” and is celebrated for Galarraga’s sportsmanship and the human element of baseball.
