was born in 1971 in Bắc Ninh Province and graduated from the Hanoi University of Fine Arts (now the Vietnam University of Fine Arts) in 2000. During his studies, Nguyễn Minh Sơn participated in many exhibitions in Hanoi from 1996 to 2000.
In the next three years, he continued to participate in various exhibitions, such as at the Hanoi Contemporary Art Center in 2001-2002, the Hanoi University of Fine Arts in 2002, and an exhibition in London. By 2004, Nguyễn Minh Sơn held his first solo exhibition at the Hilton Hanoi Hotel. This exhibition was well-received, which boosted his confidence to take part in more international exhibitions and organize solo exhibitions both at home and abroad from then on.
Born and raised in Kinh Bắc, Nguyễn Minh Sơn's dreamy and romantic soul was nurtured by the strokes and colors of the famous Đông Hồ folk paintings, combined with modern art knowledge acquired during his years at the Hanoi University of Fine Arts. Nguyễn Minh Sơn soon developed a unique path in his artistic career: distancing himself from the hustle and bustle of the "Holy Land" of Thăng Long – Hanoi, where the most advanced art schools converge, he quietly returned to seek and express the tranquil beauty of the countryside, immersing himself in its fresh and serene atmosphere.
In Nguyễn Minh Sơn's paintings, human figures are absent, yet the spaces are full of life, both hidden and revealed. This vitality is conveyed through each brushstroke, seemingly careless yet meticulously calculated in compositions that appear spontaneous but are thoughtfully considered down to the smallest detail. This is both a strength and a defining "highlight" of Nguyễn Minh Sơn's work. In his everyday inner world, it seems that Vietnamese culture, the Vietnamese soul, and Vietnamese landscapes have always been boundless sources of inspiration for his art. Thus, Nguyễn Minh Sơn's paintings, sometimes just through clusters of trees, flowers, foliage, or the sky and sea, allow viewers to feel Hanoi, where he lives, and the rural areas he has traveled through, with a sense of closeness and subtlety.
Nguyễn Minh Sơn's paintings have enjoyed early success in local, national, and international exhibitions (as mentioned above)—something that not every artist can easily achieve. He has asserted his unique voice and reaped creative rewards from his works. But is this a source of encouragement, or does it present a great challenge for Nguyễn Minh Sơn? You can find the answer for yourself through the oil landscape paintings of Nguyễn Minh Sơn.
