In the 1987 James Hardie 1000 at Mount Panorama, the Eggenberger Motorsport Texaco Ford Sierra RS500s driven by Steve Soper & Pierre Dieudonné and Klaus Ludwig & Klaus Niedzwiedz crossed the finish line first and second, but both were later disqualified after race scrutineering and protests. The disqualification was due to illegally modified front wheel arch guards that allowed the cars to run larger tyres than permitted under the Group A regulations, giving them an unfair performance advantage. The appeals process extended into 1988, but the original disqualifications were upheld, and the victory was awarded to the third-place Holden dealer team of Peter Brock, David Parsons and Peter McLeod.
